Majority rules

“Seven out of 10 Americans support remaining in the agreement, according to a national poll conducted by the Yale Program on Climate Communication after the election,” wrote Robinson Meyer of The Atlantic. “This cuts across parties: A majority of self-identified Democrats, Republicans, and independents all want to stay in the accord.”

Rick Perry supports coal power

Secretary of Energy Rick Perry doesn’t believe human activity largely contributes to climate change. He believes coal power is harmless to the environment and does not support the Paris Agreement. His agenda to subsidize coal and nuclear energy is a step in the wrong direction.

“If [Federal Energy Regulatory Commission] agrees with Perry, and if it decides coal and nuclear are more reliable, the result could potentially mean reducing the use of solar, wind and natural gas by key grid operators in favor of coal and nuclear,” said Chris Mooney and Steven Mufson of The Washington Post.

Down to the last two countries

Nicaragua came around and signed the Paris Agreement this week, leaving the U.S. and Syria the only two countries out of the pact.

“Scientists from more developed countries, scientists working at Nasa, European scientists, everyone agrees that we must stop the process that is leading to the destruction of the planet,” said Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega.

Christian leaders call for action

Christian leaders want governments to follow through with Paris Agreement promises which shows that this is not just a secularist issue – it’s a human issue.

“As Christians across the globe we are calling for action on climate change,” wrote Renew Our World, a partnership of several Christian groups. “The changing climate is causing great damage to people and planet right now, and we are particularly concerned about hunger and poverty hitting the most vulnerable communities, who did least to cause it.”

A conservative’s perspective on the Paris Agreement

Conservative think tank Nicolas Loris says that the U.S. should not renegotiate the pact, because the agreement is too costly and we can reduce carbon emissions without it.

“We don’t need to renegotiate,” said Loris. “We don’t need Paris at all.”
